Summary:

Engineers can sometimes struggle in communicating engineering concepts to non-engineers.  For structural engineers, a topic that is both very integral to our work and very relevant to the general public is environmental loading.  This presentation focuses on talking about environmental loads (mainly wind and seismic) and has two main objectives:

  1. To gain a more thorough understanding of the history and context of the equations used in ASCE 7, and
  2. To be able to talk about environmental loads in a way that is easy for non-engineers to understand.

Presented By: Michelle Atto, PE, SE

Michelle is a Technical Manager at Ruby+Associates with over thirteen years of experience in structural engineering.  She has worked on new and existing construction in various industries with a strong focus in structural steel.  Michelle received her BSE in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan and a MSE in Civil and Materials Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
