Covid changed a lot of things and one of those changes SEAMi board had to adopt was suspension of in person seminars. Although in person seminars were suspended, SEAMi board was quick to adapt, we continued to provide PDH opportunities for our members through online webinars. Now after almost three years SEAMI board is happy to announce return to in-person seminars. We will continue to offer online webinars and will alternate them with in-person seminars. Hope to see you all soon.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR LOW SEISMIC REGIONS

Michigan engineers tend to design with a “wind first, seismic as an afterthought” mentality. Most seismic presentations are given from a “seismic first” mind set, focusing on Seismic Design Category D. The goal of this presentation is to bridge the gap between the two mentalities; providing an overview of seismic design, examine the impact of seismic load in the less restrictive Seismic Design Categories A-C, and examine when seismic loads may govern in a low-seismic region.

  • Provide an overview of factors contributing to seismic design force
  • Explain the requirements for Seismic Design Categories A, B, and C
  • Introduce the simplified seismic design procedure
  • Introduce the equivalent lateral load procedure
  • Discuss seismic drift requirements
  • Discuss where seismic load may control design
