Should We Shelter?

Student Tornado Shelters in the next MBC… or not? Background and discussion on Michigan 2018 Building Code requirements for sheltering.

Did you know that the current Michigan Building Code should have included tornado sheltering requirements for certain school projects in lower Michigan and that those requirements were excluded from the MBC with little public input? Did you know that a similar directive exists in the current considerations for adopting the 2018 IBC as the basis for our next MBC? Do you know what the sheltering requirements are and to what projects they would apply to? Are you familiar with construction solutions for the structure and other aspects of a tornado shelter under the IBC? Would you like to know more about tornado sheltering, discuss concerns and ask questions related to sheltering, share your opinion on sheltering in general and the IBC/MBC provisions specifically? Please join us for an opportunity to attend a brief summary of tornado sheltering requirements and to participate in a discussion period!
